A space for steady practice

ABOUT THE STUDIO

A Space for Steady Practice

Iyengar Yoga Miami Beach was created as a dedicated space for thoughtful, alignment-based yoga in the tradition of B.K.S. Iyengar.

Our intention is simple: to offer a place where students can practice safely, progressively, and with care — regardless of age, experience, or physical condition.

This is not a fast-paced fitness studio.
It is a space for steady learning and long-term growth.

About Us

Welcoming Students of All Ages

Many of our students begin yoga later in life. Others arrive managing injuries, stiffness, joint sensitivity, or limited mobility.

The Iyengar method is uniquely suited to support these realities.

Through careful instruction and the use of props — chairs, blankets, blocks, belts, and wall support — poses are adapted so that every student can work intelligently and safely.

You are not expected to be flexible.
You are not expected to “keep up.”
You are supported in learning at your own pace.

While we are known for high standards and serious study, our approach remains accessible and humane.

Depth with Accessibility

  • The studio is intentionally simple and focused.
  • Props are provided to support precise learning.

  • Class sizes allow for attentive instruction.

  • The atmosphere is quiet, steady, and conducive to concentration.

We believe discipline and kindness belong together.

Progress is built over time through discipline and awareness.

Classes

Morning Yoga & Pranayama

A steady and nourishing way to begin the day. This class combines foundational asana with guided pranayama (breath awareness) to awaken the body and quiet the mind. Emphasis is placed on alignment, clarity of action, and cultivating a calm, focused start to your morning. Suitable for students with some prior experience or confident beginners.

Beginner

An introductory class that teaches the essential standing, seated, and restorative poses of Iyengar Yoga. Instruction is detailed and supportive, making it perfect for students who are completely new, seniors, or anyone wanting to build confidence in the basics.

Level 1

Designed for students with at least 6 months of consistent practice. Level 1 builds strength, stability, and understanding of foundational standing poses, seated postures, and basic inversions (when appropriate). Clear instruction and intelligent sequencing help deepen your knowledge of alignment and refine your practice.

General

A mixed-level class open to students with basic experience. The teacher offers variations to accommodate different levels in the room. Expect a balanced sequence including standing poses, forward extensions, twists, and introductory inversions. A great class for steady ongoing practice.

Level 1–2

For students who have established a consistent Level 1 practice and are ready for greater challenge. This class introduces more complex actions in standing poses, deeper backbends, and a wider range of inversions. Strength, stamina, and precision are developed progressively.

Intermediate

For seasoned students with several years of consistent practice. This class refines advanced asanas, longer holding times, and more subtle actions. A strong foundation in inversions and backbends is required.

Level 2

An intermediate class for experienced practitioners. Students should be comfortable with headstand, shoulderstand, and foundational backbends. Sequences are more dynamic and demanding, requiring stability, focus, and a mature understanding of alignment principles.

Gentle Class

A slower-paced class appropriate for older students, those recovering from injury, or anyone needing a softer approach. Poses are adapted with props and wall support as needed. The focus is on mobility, circulation, joint health, and overall well-being without strain.

Strong Bones

A specialized class focused on improving bone density, joint stability, and muscular strength. Using weight-bearing poses and intelligent repetition, this class is especially beneficial for students concerned about osteoporosis or age-related bone health. Safe, progressive, and empowering.

Restorative

A deeply calming class using supported postures to quiet the nervous system and relieve physical tension. Poses are held comfortably with bolsters, blankets, and other props. Ideal for stress reduction, recovery, and cultivating inner stillness.

Women’s Class

A class tailored to the unique physiological needs of women at different life stages. Sequences may address hormonal balance, menstrual health, menopause, or general vitality. The approach is therapeutic, intelligent, and supportive.

Sunday (Special Theme)

A longer-format class dedicated to a specific focus each week—such as backbends, forward extensions, inversions, pranayama, or yoga philosophy in practice. This class allows time for deeper study and exploration of the Iyengar method

Community & Continuity

She continues her advanced studies with senior teachers, including her mentor Randy Just and Pom Cayeiro.

Originally drawn to yoga to address scoliosis-related back pain, Katrin developed a deep respect for the therapeutic precision of the Iyengar method. Her teaching is known for its energetic clarity, exacting alignment, and strong commitment to the authentic transmission of B.K.S. Iyengar’s work.

Roger Richter

Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT Level 1)

Roger Richter began his yoga journey in the mid-1980s after sustaining an injury. Through the Iyengar method, he discovered not only physical rehabilitation, but a disciplined path of inward study. Since that time, yoga has remained a steady foundation in his life—strengthening the body while cultivating awareness and resilience.

Roger began his formal study of alignment-based yoga with Gabriel Halpern in Chicago, where his passion for structural clarity and intelligent action first took root. After moving to Miami in 1990, he continued his studies with Bobbi Golden, Colleen Gallagher, Dean and Rebecca Lerner, James Murphy, Pom Cayeiro, and many other influential teachers who deepened his understanding of the method.

After decades of dedicated practice, Roger earned his CIYT Level 1 certification in 2016. He remains committed to ongoing study and refinement, bringing to his classes both lived experience and respect for the precision and integrity of the Iyengar tradition

Kathy Krain

Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT)

Kathy Krrain began practicing Iyengar Yoga in 2004 after a back injury led a friend to recommend a class. Through the method’s precise sequencing and alignment, she discovered the possibility of alleviating pain while developing strength and stability. An unexpected benefit was the gradual sense of mental clarity and peace she experienced after each class, inspiring her to explore the deeper principles behind the practice.

With a background in dance, Kathy was naturally drawn to the structure, discipline, and refined body awareness central to the Iyengar method. The clarity of instruction and intelligent progression of poses affirmed her desire to become a teacher.

She has studied at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India, and continues her education with senior Iyengar teachers worldwide. Her classes emphasize careful sequencing, precise alignment, and mindful attention, supporting students in building both physical resilience and inner steadiness.

Marisó de Colsa

Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT Level II)

Marisó de Colsa is a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (Level II) who practiced yoga for most of her life before transitioning from a career in the corporate world to teaching. Inspired early on by her grandmother, a beloved yoga teacher in Mexico, she developed a lasting connection to the practice.

She fell deeply committed to Iyengar Yoga after recovering full range of motion from a frozen shoulder through disciplined, alignment-based work. Experiencing firsthand the method’s transformative effects strengthened her dedication and led her to share its physical, mental, and spiritual benefits with others.

Like all certified Iyengar teachers, Marisó continues her studies with the Iyengar family and senior teachers worldwide. Her special focus is Yoga for Stronger Bones. After sustaining a fracture related to osteoporosis, she committed herself to researching and studying how to practice safely and effectively to improve bone density, build muscle mass, and reduce fracture risk. Her teaching combines precision, care, and informed guidance, particularly for students concerned with bone health and longevity.

Our teachers are trained and certified within the Iyengar system.

Certification reflects rigorous assessment, mentorship, and commitment to maintaining the integrity of the method.
